Leaving a Gift in your will

Helen & Douglas House

This is one of the most important ways you can choose to support Helen & Douglas House - simply by remembering us in your will.

There's a common misconception that a legacy has to be an enormous amount of money, but this simply isn't the case. Any amount, no matter how small, will make a difference to Helen & Douglas House.

What are the advantages of making a will?
The most important advantage is that you get to make a positive choice about how you would like your assets to be divided after your death, rather than someone else deciding on your behalf. You will also be able to minimise the tax payable on your legacy - any donation made to Helen & Douglas House is free from inheritance tax.

How do I make a will, and what will happen if I don't?
Any practising solicitor can write a will for you. If you do not write a will, it could mean that what you leave behind might not go to the people you want it to. You could also find that a substantial part of what you leave behind could go to the State through inheritance tax.

Making a will (also known as a legacy or bequest) really is as simple as listing the things you own (money and things) and writing down who you would like them to go to when you die. Remember that is it vital that your will is written by a qualified professional.

Is it possible to change my will?
Yes, it's a very good idea to review your will on a regular basis. You can make simple amendments to an existing will by writing a 'codicil' - a signed document referring to the existing will, detailing any alterations.

What types of will are there?

- A share (or percentage) of your estate
- Money
- Specific gifts (like houses, land or other possessions)
- Gifts which are dependent on certain events, such as a donation to a charity on the condition other benefactors have already died.

What should I do next?
Call your solicitor to make an appointment. You can also call us on 01865 794749 for further information, or write to Joanne Mitchell, Helen & Douglas House, 14a Magdalen Road, Oxford, OX4 1RW. We're here to support you in anything that you would like to do to help Helen & Douglas House.

Should I let you know if I intend to leave a legacy?
It's very helpful to let us know, as it means that we can keep you in touch with relevant areas of our work, and in a way that you prefer (such as e-mails, newsletters and information about local events). It also means that we can keep you in touch with our work in the most appropriate way, as we know that you have already made this fantastic commitment. Of course, any information you provide will remain secure and confidential.

Can I visit Helen & Douglas House to see what I am supporting?
Yes - we have a number of open sessions a year, either at our summer open day or in smaller groups. We believe it is vital to involve people in what we do, so please call us if you would like to learn more about what goes on at Helen & Douglas House.
