Helen & Douglas House are looking for volunteers to provide families with extra support to relieve some of the pressure on the family. We hope that volunteer support will give the family the space to do the things they’re normally unable to, or enable them to spend more quality time together as a family.
What’s involved?
The kinds of support that the volunteer will provide will depend on the family but could include:
- Practical tasks in the home like cleaning, cooking, shopping or laundry
- Spending time with children, collecting them from school, helping with homework or playing games
- Being an extra pair of hands on a family trip or day out, or visiting the family during a hospital admission
- Spending quality time with the family
Volunteers
If you’ve had experience of working with children or families that would be great, but it’s not essential as we will provide training. What is important is that you have a broad range of interests and can commit time. You must be calm, patient and caring, have good communication skills and be able to relate to children and families.
All volunteers will be CRB checked.
The commitment
We ask that volunteers commit to support a family for 2 hours each week for 12 months. In return we offer you training as well as ongoing support.
