Registered Nurse (Adult)
Registered Nurses (Adult) work alongside Learning Disability Nurses and our Care Team Support staff in Douglas House caring for young adults between the ages of 16 and 35. They provide 1:1 care for an individual guest. Our nurses don’t just look after the clinical needs of a young person, but take a more holistic approach. This could include spending time with the young adult while they are resting, or relaxing in our sensory room or Jacuzzi, or taking a trip to the cinema or, for the more outgoing young adults, a night at the local nightclub.

 

Registered Nurse - Learning Disability
Learning Disability Nurses work alongside Registered Nurses (Adult) and our Care Team Support staff in Douglas House caring for young adults between the ages of 16 and 35. They provide 1:1 care for an individual guest. Our nurses don’t just look after the clinical needs of a young person, but take a more holistic approach. 
This could include spending time with the young adult while they are resting, or relaxing in our sensory room or Jacuzzi, or taking a trip to the cinema or, for the more outgoing young adults, a night at the local nightclub.

 

Registered Nurse – (RSCN) Child
Paediatric Nurses work in Helen House and work alongside Nursery Nurses to provide 1:1 holistic care for the children and their families. This could include attending to the clinical needs of the child, sitting quietly with a child while they rest, or a day out - somewhere like the Cotswold Wildlife Park. In addition, a member of the Helen House team may also find themselves supporting a sibling though a play activity, or sitting with a parent discussing their needs over a cup of coffee. Nurses working within Helen House are required to have a Paediatric qualification.

 

Care Team Support
Our Care Team Support Staff are required to undertake, or have achieved, NVQ level 2 or Level 3 in care. Working within Douglas House they will work 1: 1 with a young adult attending to their clinical needs, as well as providing holistic support. This could include spending some time with the young adult in our sensory room or Jacuzzi, sitting quietly with a young adult while they rest, taking a trip to the cinema or, for the more outgoing young adults, a night at the local nightclub.

 

Nursery Nurses
Our Nursery Nurses work alongside the nursing team within Helen House to providie 1:1 holistic care for children and their families. This could include attending to the clinical needs of the child, sitting quietly with a child while they rest, or a day out – somewhere like the Cotswold Wildlife Park. A member of the Helen House team may also find themselves supporting a sibling though a play activity, or sitting with a parent discussing their needs over a cup of coffee.
 

Administrative and Clerical
Helen & Douglas House has a range of administrative and clerical roles that support the care teams and the organisational supporting functions. These can range from reception staff to personal assistance. All administrative and clerical staff will have some contact with our children and young adults and their families, but this will not be on a daily basis.

Our fundraising team work very hard to maintain the profile of Helen & Douglas House within the local community and at times this can mean working some unusual hours! However, working within the fundraising team offers you the opportunity to meet and work with a wide range of enthusiastic and dedicated  people.

 

Maintenance
Maintaining the quality and ‘feel’ of Helen & Douglas House premises is vitally important. Our maintenance team work hard to ensure the look and feel of the building is right and that the health and safety of all visitors to Helen & Douglas House is protected. Including a range of skilled personnel, the team works in all areas of the organisation, coming into regular contact with our children, young adults and families - whether it be putting up a picture, or re-designing an office space. 
 

Retail Management
The Retail Shop Management Team is responsible for the safe, smooth running of  Helen & Douglas House shops. This includes the management of a team of volunteer staff, who provide enormous support to our shop management teams. Shop Managers and their Assistants divide the management of the shops between them over a six day week. It is therefore important to make plans in advance, as face to face communication is not always possible. As representatives of Helen & Douglas House in the local community shop staff are also central to communicating the organisational aims and recruiting support for the charity through their customers.

 

Family Support and Bereavement
The Family Support and Bereavement team work alongside our care teams to respond to the emotional and spiritual needs of the children, young adults and families. The team includes Counsellors, a Chaplain and a Social Worker who are trained not only to respond to bereavement, but also to enable the children and young adults and families make the most of living.

 

Finance
Helen & Douglas House has an annual turnover of 6 million pounds and keeping all of that in order is no small feat!  As well as ensuring compliance with financial instruction, our finance team members come into regular contact with the children, young adults and families using Helen & Douglas House services and those wishing to make donations to the organisation.

 
Housekeeping
Maintaining the cleanliness and tidiness of the Helen & Douglas House premises is very important. Many of our children and young adults are at greater risk of contracting infections as a result of their conditions. As valued members of the Helen & Douglas House team, housekeeping staff come into regular contact with our children, young adults and families and need to be sensitive to their requirements when undertaking their duties.

 

Catering
The kitchens in both Helen House and Douglas House are central to the daily activities. Not only do the catering team provide healthy and nutritious meals for our children, young adults and families, they are also expert at making a range of naughty but nice, treats, such a cakes and pastries! Situated at the heart of the two houses our catering staff regularly interact with the children, young adults and families who can often be found in the kitchen, trying their hand at cooking. In addition the catering team respond to the needs of our staff, providing delicious lunches and catering for meetings.


Human Resources and Volunteering
The Human Resources Team look after the employment needs and wellbeing of over 200 employed staff, as well as the wellbeing of over 600 volunteers working across our region. Medical
We employ a team of doctors who are specialists in children and young adults palliative care. The doctors currently on the team come from a variety of backgrounds, including general practice, children’s palliative care, paediatrics and adult palliative care. The doctors are involved with every admission according to the needs of the child, young adult or their family. This can range from speaking with families about advanced care planning, to managing difficult systems such as pain, breathlessness or seizures. A doctor is on site every day apart from Sundays and the team provides 24 hour, 365 day cover for Helen & Douglas. They provide on-site services, telephone and emergency support.

 

Clinical Bank Staff
Our clinical bank staff are available to support the regular care team members on an ad-hoc basis. They are required to undertake the same duties as regularly employed member of staff and in return receive a level of satisfaction and achievement that caring for an individual on a 1:1 basis can bring. Please note that placements are limited and if you wish to do work experience within a clinical area you must be over the age of 16, or in your first year of A-level study.
