Meet Shiatsu Volunteer – Tanya
‘Helen & Douglas House was not what I expected at all (…) It felt more to me like walking into a fun activity camp than a hospice. Before I went there I had a vision of the hospice as a place offering care and comfort. I didn’t think of it as a place that created joy, but that is what I feel at Helen & Douglas House.’
Meet Photography Volunteer – Kate
‘Volunteering has given me the privilege of working very closely with some extraordinary families, sometimes during the most difficult moments of their family life. It is humbling to meet parents and children who are facing some very tough physical and emotional challenges, and they do it with perspective, patience, humour, and love.’
Meet Home Volunteer – Hilary
‘I have learnt a lot from everyone I have met at Helen & Douglas House and especially the family that I visit as a home volunteer. I have also appreciated the training sessions offered by the hospice.’
Meet Arts & Crafts Volunteer – Helle
‘Being part of the Helen & Douglas House family has enriched me in ways I could not have imagined. I feel very privileged to be invited along on local families’ journeys I have been in contact with.’
Can you help? We are extremely short of volunteers in our charity shops!
Giving just 4 hours a week of your time will make an enormous difference to our hospice. Visit your local HDH charity shop and ask for an application form or phone one of them for more information.
Meet Home Volunteers – Don and Sandie
‘There is much enjoyment to be had in being part of an invaluable organisation with such a positive approach to life. We get more from volunteering that we put in! The people at the hospice are amazing – we have made many friends.’
Meet Shop Volunteer – Dawn
‘I love volunteering at the Helen & Douglas House shop because I like meeting new people and we have fun volunteering there. Every year we get invited to a Christmas party where we all get together to celebrate.’
Meet Shop Volunteers – Carol, Isobel & Davina
‘I like helping at the shop, meeting new people and working with clothes and books. I have made many new friends through volunteering and it has got me out of the house. I have also learned new skills to be able to work in a shop.’
