When we think about running, we often focus on the physical benefits – stronger muscles, a healthier heart, or improved endurance. But for many people, the most powerful impact of running goes far beyond fitness. It’s about mental wellbeing.
We spoke with Becky, a Level 2 Run Coach, Cancer Exercise Specialist, and Occupational Therapist, who recently ran the London Marathon in a Helen & Douglas House costume!
Becky works for the charity Mind, helping people use movement to support their mental wellbeing. She also coaches runners and helps individuals living with or beyond cancer to move more and stay active. As someone who has taken on big challenges (including running the London Marathon in full costume for charity!), Becky knows first hand how transformative running can be.
Here’s what she shared about how running supports mental health:
- Boosts endorphins, giving us the ‘happy feelings’
- Improves emotional regulation, helping us process emotions more effectively
- Reduces stress hormones, promoting calm and relaxation
- Improves sleep
- Improves cognitive function so we can think clearer
- Builds a sense of achievement, increases confidence, and creates community

Take the first step
If you’re looking for a way to improve your mental health, lace up your trainers and start your running journey.
You don’t need to be fast, just moving consistently can make a real difference. And if you’re looking for that extra motivation, why not take on an iconic challenge and run in support of a cause that truly matters?
By joining Team Helen & Douglas House at the London Marathon, Paris Marathon, or Oxford Half, you’ll not only boost your own wellbeing, you’ll be helping us support children and families who need it most. Every mile you run and every pound you raise helps us continue our vital work.
Run for your mind. Run for a cause. Run with us.
