Meet Sienna. Sienna is 15 years old and lives in Marlborough with her Mum, Janeta. Sienna has Dravet’s Syndrome, a severe and life-limiting form of Epilepsy characterised by frequent seizures and a variety of challenging complications.

A place for respite and joy

Helen & Douglas House is more than just a hospice—it’s a haven that offers supportive stays for families like Sienna’s. These stays provide much-needed respite for mothers like Janeta, who face the daily challenges of caring for a child with a complex condition. For Sienna, these stays are filled with moments of joy. She loves splashing around in the therapeutic pool and spending time with animals like Banjo the pony and Bertie, the PAT dog. These activities not only bring her joy but also offer therapeutic benefits that help manage her condition.

Sienna said: “What I truly cherish about Helen and Douglas House is the warm and welcoming atmosphere. It feels like a second home to me. The nurses and all the staff are incredibly kind, caring and understanding; they genuinely recognise what I’m going through, which makes me feel comfortable being myself.

I enjoy the various activities they offer, especially the arts and crafts, but my favourite is baking delicious chocolate cookies. I can create lots of happy memories, regardless of my medical condition”

Caring for the whole family

“From the first visit, it was clear that the staff at Helen & Douglas House were not just focused on Sienna’s medical needs, they were committed to caring for our entire family. They provide a nurturing environment where we can share our fears, joys, and experiences with others who understand our journey. Their kindness and understanding has allowed us to breathe again, helping us navigate the complexities of Sienna’s condition with hope and resilience.
