Youth and Transition
Supporting young people to achieve the best out of their life, and to be the best they can beThe Youth and Transition Workers at Helen & Douglas House support young people with their lives, enabling them to be the best they can be and to achieve the best out of their life.
They also support transition as the young person moves from child services to adult care and support.
Youth work
Our youth workers create supportive, positive and trusted relationships with young people and their families. They enable people to find out what is important to them, and what they would like to achieve in life.
Our youth workers encourage socialising, trying new activities, group work, being with peers, creating friendships, allowing opinions, developing life skills and giving young people a voice. Their support enables and encourages young people to gain confidence and increase their independence and self-esteem.

One to one sessions
For those who are aged 13+, who have the capacity, and who want to engage with another person. Suitable for those who may be struggling in certain situations and may need extra support.
- We’ll offer someone to listen, to support and to hang out with and do activities. All talk is confidential between the youth worker and the young person, unless there are safeguarding issues.
- The decision to have the support lies with the young person.
- Sessions take place in Helen House, at home, in school, in hospital or in another setting.

Youth group
We offer young people the chance to get together with their peers in a youth group called ‘Network Saturdays’ where the young people to socialise, build confidence and find lasting friendships.
Activities include:
- Weekend sleepovers,
- Boat rides on the river
- A trip to the ice cream shop
- Themed days
- And more…
Transition support
As your child gets older, the move from familiar children’s services to new adult services can feel very daunting.
Transition is not a single event, but a gradual process, ideally beginning at around the age of 14 years to tie in with the Year 9 school annual review. A good transition should build on your young person’s strengths and, wherever possible, work with them to plan for how they can meet their aspirations in life.
Ideally it involves your child and parents/carers to support you to understand the changes that will happen in the next few years. It should highlight you, in your own right, and as carers as your child reaches the legal age of adulthood. The legal age of becoming an adult is 18 in the UK.
Our Transition Workers support the young people of Helen & Douglas House and their families. They can offer information and advice, refer-on to other services, advocate, listen, and offer emotional support through a difficult time.
