How do I get involved?
Home and garden volunteers are matched with individual Helen House families. The needs of each family will vary but volunteers generally help around the family home with light cleaning, ironing, gardening, shopping etc. Some volunteers may also help siblings with homework or play games.
Main responsibilities and duties include:
- Regularly visiting a family to offer practical help in the home as requested by the family.
- Being a ‘listening ear’ where appropriate.
- Helping with light cleaning and tidying.
We’re looking for someone who is non-judgemental and non-discriminatory. Reliability and punctuality are key, along with a calm demeanour and the ability to make people feel at ease.
You will be able to commit to around 3-4 hours per week (including travelling time), for up to one year. Our families are often based in the counties surrounding Oxfordshire, so some travel may be required.
Experience and training:
We’re looking for someone who has the confidence to work on their own in a family home. Experience of working with children or families would be an advantage, but it’s not essential – full training will be provided (both face-to-face and online).
Show your interest:
If you are interested in this volunteer role but would like to find out more, we have information evenings about the different roles, these are every six weeks. To apply or register your interest, please email email@example.com or call 01865794749, extension 363.
At Helen & Douglas House, we help make life a little more bearable for local families facing the challenges and heartbreak of caring for a terminally ill child. At Helen & Douglas House, we help make life a little more bearable for local families facing the challenges and heartbreak of caring for a terminally ill child. Without the £3.6 million a year it takes to keep our doors open, we would have to turn away families at a desperately sad time in their lives.
