At Helen & Douglas House we understand how important it is for families to enjoy special moments together, especially when they’re navigating complex and often challenging journeys. That’s why, every other month, we host our much-loved Stay & Play days – joyful, relaxed, and welcoming sessions designed to bring comfort, connection, and a little bit of magic to the children and families in our care.
A day for the whole family
Stay & Play days are open to all the families we care for, including parents, siblings, and other immediate family members. These events offer a rare opportunity for families to simply be together and to enjoy each other’s company in a space that is fully accessible, safe, and non-judgmental.
It’s more than just a day out. It’s a chance to meet others who truly understand. Many parents tell us how valuable it is to connect with families in similar situations and to share stories all without having to explain or justify their experiences.

Shailza, Riley’s Mum said:
“Stay & Play days are great opportunities for a full or half-day out. Knowing that Helen & Douglas House has all the amenities to support my child with additional needs makes life so much easier. Added benefits are meeting other families – some old, some new. It’s always lovely to chat and share experiences; it makes these days truly special. Caring for a child with additional needs can sometimes feel isolating, and not everyone understands what you’re going through. But as part of the Helen & Douglas House family, we’re all in the same boat, and it makes it easier. There is always something special planned by the Play Team too.”

Michaela, Margot’s Mum said:
“The Stay & Play days at Helen & Douglas House provide us, as a family, a unique opportunity where we can both celebrate Margot and participate in the activities that she likes to do, where Margot is the focus. With Margot’s complex special needs it can be very hard to find an activity or event where we can all participate as a family without limitations. However, these days provide entertainment for all of the family, so much so that Margot’s younger sister often asks to go to Helen & Douglas House to play! These days also provide a great opportunity to meet and interact with other families where we have exchanged ideas, knowledge and a laugh. We appreciate and value the Stay & Play Days.”
Packed with playful possibilities
No two Stay & Play days are the same. From colourful arts and crafts stations to calming sensory zones, there’s something for every age and ability to enjoy. We love to build our days around themed events. You might find yourself sailing the seas on a pirate adventure, exploring the ocean in an ‘Under the Sea’ experience, or enjoying the sunshine at a beach-themed day.
We also welcome extra-special visitors who bring even more excitement: think cuddly ponies, talented face painters, musical performances from the brilliant Out of the Blue acapella singers and more. And of course, we make sure that lunch is provided, so families can focus on enjoying the day together without worry.

Why it matters
The benefits of Stay & Play days go far beyond the activities. These gatherings give families a chance to step away from the everyday pressures of medical appointments, routines, and caregiving responsibilities. In this space, everyone can relax and be themselves.
Children can laugh, play, and explore. Parents can connect, breathe, and find support. Siblings can feel included and celebrated. It’s about creating those little moments of magic, the smiles, the giggles, the quiet comfort, that become cherished memories.

A magical moment
At our May Stay & Play day, Oxford University’s a cappella group, Out of the Blue, performed Y.M.C.A for Elliot who has been coming to Helen & Douglas House since April 2023. He had a recent hospital admission, so this brought him so much joy – his face says it all!
The whole room joined in dancing, singing and doing the actions. It was a special moment and one we will remember at Helen & Douglas House. This is just one of the many magical moments that happen at our Stay & Play days.
